The winner of the Wairarapa Times-Age "subscribe and win a car" competition is taking the Christmas spirit to the limit and giving the spoils away. Masterton man David Rhodes' sole entry was plucked from several thousand last week and on Friday he was alerted to his good fortune. But when
the Times-Age's Russell Broughton and Robert Cimino, along with Ian Hoggard and Andy Sinclair of Majestic Motors, went calling on Mr Rhodes, he did not leap up and head directly for the track, but asked if he could make a phone call. "Can I call my ex-wife?"
He wasn't ringing to gloat, but to tell her he had won the car and was giving it to her. Mr Rhodes, who drives only a mobility scooter, said he wanted to give her the car so that when his daughters return from their lives in London they can have a decent one available.
"It's for my ex-wife, that's why I put it in. I have two daughters living in London, and they can have a car to use when they come out. "And when I ask them to take me to Wanganui to visit my sister, they won't be able to say no. "They wouldn't anyway, though."
