Car left so badly damaged in North Canterbury crash police don't know how many are dead or injured

The crash is on Mouse Point Rd in North Canterbury.

Two people are reportedly dead after a car and truck crashed in North Canterbury this morning.

The car is so badly smashed after the crash, police cannot say how many people were in the vehicle but Fairfax is reporting two people have died.

Emergency services are at the crash, which happened about 8am, on Mouse Point Rd in Culverden, North Canterbury.

Senior Sergeant Paul Reeves said because of the severity of the crash police were still working out how many people were in the car.

The truck driver was not injured.

The road is now closed and diversions are in place at State Highway 7 and Flintoft Rd, and SH7 and Rotherham Rd.

Reeves said the diversions were likely to remain in place until at least 1pm.

"Motorists are being asked to avoid the area or delay travel, if possible.''

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
