A roadside worker is in a serious condition in hospital after he was struck by a car trying to escape police.
The hit-and-run driving happened just before 1pm on Stokes Valley Rd in the Hutt Valley, north of Wellington.
Police say officers were driving along the road when theysaw the driver of a vehicle turning from Chittick St trying to hide their identity.
"Due to this suspicious behaviour, officers have begun to make a U-turn and, during this, the vehicle has taken off at speed," a police statement says.
"Police officers have then initiated a pursuit with lights and sirens."
The chased vehicle lost control navigating corners and struck a traffic management worker, who was with a team working on powerlines.
It appeared the three occupants of the vehicle took off after it stopped.
The police car stopped by the stricken worker and an officer provided first aid until emergency services arrived, while the second police officer chased the driver.
