Springston School pupil Alexander Bennett, 10, dies in Canterbury road crash

The child who died after being hit by a car on a Canterbury rural road has been named by police.

Alexander Bennett, 10, died following a serious crash on Leeston Rd, Springston, yesterday afternoon.

Today police confirmed his identity and said their thoughts were with his loved ones.

Springston School, which teaches Year 1-8 students, also confirmed that Alexander was one of its pupils.

“We have had a tragic passing of a student of our school. We are unable to provide any further details at this point as the police investigation is continuing.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the child at this point as well as staff and students who are being supported within the school,” the school board said.

Yesterday, police said the child died at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services.

The road was closed between Goulds Rd and Bethels Rd while the Serious Crash Unit investigated.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash continue.
