Call to review police zero tolerance campaign

The Police Minister has called on New Zealand Police to undertake a review of their Summer Road Safety campaign.

Michael Woodhouse said he had received considerable public feedback the police's speed tolerance message was confusing.

Mr Woodhouse said a review of the messages that underpinned the 2014 /2015 campaign needed to be carried out.

"While I firmly support police's zero tolerance for poor driving behaviour that can lead to death and injury on our roads, I also support the application of discretion as articulated in the 4km/h summer tolerance used in fixed speed cameras and the vast majority of mobile devices."

He asked the review be completed in time for changes to be made to the campaign before the Easter Holiday period.

"Police share my enthusiasm for clearly articulated safety messages that maintain public confidence and I want to be sure we have those messages clear," he said.

Mr Woodhouse said he would paying a close interest in the review to ensure the message about road safety were clear and unambiguous.

"It is important that the police and public work together to ensure our roads are a safe place to be, especially over the summer while there are more people on the road."
