The man arrested over the armed stand-off in Palmerston North has appeared in court this morning.

Caleb Peter Kovaleski, 25, is facing four new charges over the incident. They are using a firearm against a police officer, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and failing to stop for police.

Kovaleski is also charged with breaching bail on June 23, and stealing a Ford Courier Ute from Feilding on May 20.

He made a brief appearance in Palmerston North District Court this morning where he was represented by court-appointed counsel Penelope Walker.

She did not oppose media applications and consented to Kovaleski being remanded in custody until his next appearance on July 21.

Kovaleski wore a hooded sweatshirt and T-shirt and kept his arms folded throughout his appearance before a Justice of the Peace.

He looked into the public gallery in court where his grandparents were seated.

Kovaleski surrendered peacefully to police yesterday after a nearly two day stand-off with police.

The entire Palmerston North suburb of Cloverlea was in lockdown, but cordons were lifted after his arrest last night.
