A burst sewerage pipe has shut down a central Wellington street and people wanting to visit the police station are being urged to phone instead.

Police say the incident has occurred in Victoria St.

The public is asked to avoid the area.

Anyone seeking to visit Wellington Central Police Station is instead urged call 105, or in an emergency, 111.
