A Tauranga man who last year stole an antique safe from a home, then used an angle grinder to get to more than $5000 inside it, has been jailed for 13 months.

Daymon Riki Tanatiu, 27, who pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police, resisting arrest and breaching community work, was sentenced this week.

He must pay $2000 reparation on his release from prison.
