The total number of consents rose by nine, up to a total of 135.
There were 23 consents for new or prebuilt houses, units, baches or warehouses, up from 19. There was also an increase in consents for outbuildings, which jumped from five last year to 18.
Building consent application values for the period from January to March 2016 were up 54 per cent on the same period last year, a $1.9 million increase.
The trend was expected to continue, Ms Davis said. "We expect the building values numbers to continue to rise over the next couple of years."
