Two young Napier children were struck by a car on a school crossing in front of horrified schoolmates and teachers this morning.
The brother and sister, aged six and 10, pupils of Nelson Park School, received what were described as moderate injuries and were taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital.
Their
names and conditions were not available, although Napier police traffic sergeant Nigel Hurley said the injuries were not life threatening.
An investigation into the incident is under way and the male driver of the car involved had been interviewed.
It is understood he told police the low morning sun had affected his vision.
"This is a very unfortunate but timely reminder that motorists must drive to the conditions," Mr Hurley said.
The driver was said to be "shattered" by what had happened. A decision on whether charges would be laid would not be made until the investigation was completed.
The children had been crossing from the northern side of the road toward the school just after 8.30am and were hit just a few metres from the safety of the opposite footpath.
Police confirmed the crossing was well manned and "School Patrol" signs were out. Two teachers were in attendance to assist the road patrol wardens.
The driver of the east-bound car stopped about 50m further along the road after realising he had hit someone.
Mr Hurley said the distraught parents of the children had not been far away and rushed back.
While a teacher called emergency services for help, others comforted the injured youngsters.
The road was closed for about an hour as accident inspectors carried out an investigation.
