Police believe high speeds could have been be a factor in a crash that killed two young people in Canterbury last week.

“While investigations into the cause of the crash continue, initial indications suggest high speed was a factor in this crash, where the vehicle collided with a power pole,” Canterbury Rural Area Commander Inspector Peter Cooper said.

Joey Young, 20, died in the crash on Butchers Rd, Clarkville on Saturday, Stuff reported.

The other victim is a 17-year-old female.

“Police continue to work with the families involved and offer their sympathies to them during this traumatic time,” Cooper said.

Emergency teams rushed to the crash at 12.10am on Saturday, finding two people already dead at the scene.

A third was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Young was a student at the New Zealand Broadcasting School in Christchurch when he died.

Christchurch Grass Kart Club president Stan McKenzie told Stuff Young was “a very nice young fella” who was “right into his sport and music”.

“He was just starting his career… and was very well known.”

Loved ones shared tributes on social media.

“Such a beautiful talented boy. My heart breaks for you guys,” one person wrote.

Another described Young as “a wonderful, loving, caring, beautiful, handsome boy taken way too soon”.

Another loved one reminisced on Young’s “gorgeous singing voice”.

“You will be missed gorgeous boy. Keep creating that cheekiness wherever you are,” said another.
