Changes include removing the walls at the western end of the bridge and the construction of a grand staircase, a new ramp creating a processional connection to the neighbouring bronze statue of First World War hero and Victoria Cross winner Henry Nicholas, and paving which links with the river promenade and in-ground lighting to highlight the Triumphal Arch.
The moves have been planned in consultation with Christchurch Returned Services' Association (RSA).
City Care and JFC Limited have been awarded the contract to begin constructing the next sections of Te Papa Ōtākaro /Avon River Precinct, which includes the Bridge of Remembrance and adjacent Park of Remembrance.
Work is due to begin mid-January, with Ms Wagner saying work is expected to be complete by April 25 next year.
