Bridge closed on SH1 after serious crash

A serious motorbike crash has closed State Highway One in North Canterbury this afternoon.

The incident on the north side of the Ashley River bridge, at Waikuku, has resulted in the bridge being closed.

Police, Fire Service and St John are in attendance.

Details of injuries and how many people are involved are not yet known.

Diversions inland have been put in place for light vehicles only at this time.

"There is no timeframe for the road reopening at this stage," a police statement said.
