On the heels of their last release, BrazilBeat Sound System have collaborated with Gisborne vocalist Jasmine Taare and producer Maaka Phat to bring out “This Time”.
The sparkling house music track draws together shimmering vocals with heavyweight production, and blissful exuberance, that should make it a dance floor standard.
JasmineTaare (Ngati Porou, Ngai Tamanuhiri) is a singer songwriter based in Te Tairāwhiti/Gisborne.
Growing up in a musical family, Taare began performing from a young age and has won many accolades at the local Country Music Awards. In 2007 she was crowned the Country Music Entertainer of the Year and was also the first champion of Māori TV’s talent show Homai te Pakipaki.
Taare has showcased her skills on various reality TV singing competitions, including X Factor, Pukana, Five Minutes of Fame, Māorioke and My Country Song. She has sung with music legends such as Maisey Rika, Jackie Clarke, Brannigan Kaa and Dennis Marsh, and is an active supporter of the local music community.
Gisborne singer Jasmine Taare is the vocalist on a new collaboration with BrazilBeat Sound System called This Time.
BrazilBeat (comprising Nego Beto on percussion and DJ Mara) continues to pump out their music, having released an EP and two singles in the past three years.
The EP Tropicalness contained five songs ranging in genres from Afrobeat to house. The single “Beautiful Linda”, created with Sydney-based Chilean producer Tony Garcia and featuring Beto’s vocals, is a straight-up house track that has been racking up plays and been popular in clubs.
Earlier this year BrazilBeat pulled an old track “Future Is Now” out of the trunk and breathed new life into it, creating the Bangers Remix.
Maaka Phat, drummer of the iconic Aotearoa band Southside of Bombay, is one of the country’s most respected producers, having worked with many top New Zealand artists and toured his own original act WAI with co-creator Mina Ripia through Asia, Europe and North America. Their album Wai 100%, which came out in 2000, was ahead of its time, fusing reo Māori vocals with electronic beats.
They say “This Time” is a song about relationships, about getting back together and doing it right.
“It’s about the longing that goes with being in love, and the recognition of past challenges, knowing that to be our complete selves we need to come to terms with the past. It’s about optimism, and the belief that we can break old habits. We can be better people… THIS TIME.”
