Police are commending the actions of two Hamiltonians who rescued a 12-year-old boy from a potential indecent assault at a park in a city.
Detective Sergeant Carl Moon said police were called to a car park for the golf and mini-golf courses at north Hamilton's Tauhara Park early Friday evening, between 6-7pm.
"Workers at the park saw some behaviour that concerned them between a 69-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy in a black Honda Civic hatchback. Fortunately for the child they took the appropriate step of removing him from the car and contacted us," Mr Moon said.
"It appears the man and boy were at the park for some time and would probably have appeared to be a grandfather and grandson. From an investigator's perspective we want to hear from anyone at the park who may have seen the pair or witnessed anything they feel wasn't right."
Mr Moon said the man was taken into custody and the child was given appropriate support before being returned home.
"A key factor in these situations is that police need to know what is happening, we need people to step up to the mark when something isn't right and tell us about it.
"Given the matter is now before the courts we are limited in what we can say at this time but what I can tell you is the inquiry is quite involved with a lot of work for investigators to progress through and we're not ruling out there could be other victims."
Anyone with any information on Friday night's incident is asked to contact Mr Moon at the Hamilton Police Station on 07 858 6200 or anonymously Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
