Boy hit by car in Opotiki while walking home from beach

An 8-year-old boy was struck by a car as he walked home from a Christmas Day swim.

The boy was hit as he crossed the road back to his house in Opotiki yesterday evening, a BayTrust Rescue Helicopter spokesperson said.

The rescue chopper was called to the scene, where paramedics were treating the boy.

He was airlifted to Rotorua Hospital in a comfortable condition, the BayTrust Rescue Helicopter spokesperson said.

St John Ambulance said the incident happened around 8pm.

Three St John vehicles went to the scene.
