Body found in Auckland’s Mt Albert as emergency services flood scene

A rubbish collector was heard calling for help shortly before another man was found dead by nearby residents in an inner Auckland suburb.

Emergency services swarmed a Mt Albert street after the body was found this afternoon.

The incident has left residents in the normally quiet Linwood Ave shaken.

Witness Peter Huang said he returned home from an MRI scan and noticed a black van parked outside his home had crashed into a rubbish bin.

Ten minutes later, he heard a rubbish collector outside calling for help.

When Huang approached the van to assist, the engine was still on.

“I went to try help too, but saw the man was motionless or lifeless,” he said.

Huang said police told him the man, who was in his 50s, had died of a heart attack.

Another neighbour told the Herald the street was “usually pretty quiet”.

“Nothing dramatic ever happens around here,” she said.

A resident earlier said she could hear sirens ringing out continuously in the area.

Police were focused on a block of flats that were set back from the road, she said.

An RNZ reporter at the scene said she could see a body on the road.

Hato Hone St John said it was notified at 1.40pm and responded with an ambulance and two rapid response vehicles.

Police said they are not treating the death as suspicious.
