Body found on Fox Glacier was UK national killed in 2015 helicopter crash

A body discovered by a tramper on Fox Glacier earlier this month has been formally identified as one of seven people killed in a helicopter crash two years ago.

Police this afternoon named the victim as Cynthia Charlton, of the UK.

The 70-year-old lost her life on what was a huge trip to New Zealand with husband Nigel Charlton, 66, who was also killed in the crash.

She was a mother of two children and a grandmother of three.

At the time, the couple's family released a statement through the Foreign Office acknowledging their parents loved to travel.

"Our family is deeply saddened by the tragic news.

"They were very adventurous when it came to travel and this holiday was to be their last big adventure together."

The couple were among six tourists on a sightseeing trip with Alpine Adventurers in November 2015.

Also from the UK were Andrew Virco, 50, and his partner Katharine Walker, 51, and Australians Sovannmony Leang, 27, and 29-year-old Josephine Gibson.

Kiwi pilot Mitchell Gameren, 28, of Queenstown, also lost his life.

Following the crash, a large search and rescue and recovery effort was carried out and police, the Transport Accident Investigation Commission as well as the Civil Aviation Authority of NZ investigated the incident.

The CAA also suspended the Air Operating Certificate of the managing director of the helicopter company after the accident.

Authorities said at the time they had recovered all seven bodies.

However, further remains belonging to Cynthia Charlton would be found almost two years later after a tramper made the discovery near a crevasse near Chancellor Hut on March 2.

Police said today they had been in touch with her family overseas.
