The National Party has a new president today, after party delegates voted more than two-to-one to give the job to Michelle Boag over incumbent John Slater.
At the annual National Party conference in Auckland, delegates voted 414-175 in favour of the 46-year-old public relations consultant.
Boag was the clear favourite leading up
to today's vote, after she won four of the five regional conference nominations.
Boag has promised changes for the party, and before today's vote she outlined a programme for the coming months that included workshops, retreats and forums where members and supporters could contribute to the development of party policy.
Slater, a 57-year-old Auckland textile importer, had campaigned on his three-year history in the job, but Boag's landslide victory today illustrated the party's desire to inject some fresh blood as they build to the next election.
