Blessie Gotingco appeal tops $125,000 ahead of anniversary

Donations to the Gotingco family have passed $125,000 on the eve of the anniversary of her murder.

On 24 May 2014 Blessie Gotingco was raped and murdered by Tony Robertson as she walked home from work.

He had been released from prison just five months earlier and was subject to GPS tracking as part of an extended supervision order.

He was jailed for life after a jury found him guilty of raping and murdering the 56-year-old mother-of-three and grandmother.

Following his sentencing an independent government review was launched into the management of Robertson both before and after his release from prison.

Last week an independent inquiry made 27 recommendations but concluded Robertson, and no one else, could be held responsible for Mrs Gotingco's death.

"However the Inquiry found that no aspects of Mr Robertson's management by Corrections or police provided an opportunity for Mr Robertson to murder Mrs Gotingco," said Justice Minister Judith Collins.

Days later Mrs Gotingco's husband Antonio revealed he was considering filing a civil case against the Department of Corrections.

A Givealittle fundraising page was launched on Friday night, on what would have been Mrs Gotingco's 58th birthday.

The second anniversary of her murder is tomorrow.

This afternoon donations to the Givealittle page pushed past $125,000.

Mr Gotingco wanted to thank those who had donated and supported his cause.

"We just wanted to send a note thanking you all for your overwhelming support. We are truly thankful and humbled by each and every one," he said.

"This is a particularly tough week for us with the anniversary of Blessie's passing tomorrow, but please know that all your beautiful comments of support are so precious for us - we will treasure them forever."

While it was a hard time for the family Mr Gotingco said his resolve was strong.

"Together we can deliver justice for Blessie and prevent this happening to anyone else. The Department of Corrections should have no option but to take notice of how we are ALL standing together in the name of public safety."
