No one was injured in the fire, however initial reports suggested residents of the house were home when the fire occurred, Mr Dalton said.
They were being assisted by victim support.
The property was "un-liveable" following the blaze, which was believed to have started in the lounge of the house, he said.
While there were no reports that the fire was suspicious, fire investigators were at the scene this morning.
Meanwhile, a fire in the Queenstown Lakes district suburb of Ben Lomond damaged a two-storey home early this morning.
The fire occurred on Alpine Retreat Rd around 5.30am, a Southern Fire Communications spokesman said.
Three appliances responded to the blaze.
"They've said it's a moderate fire on the second level of a dwelling."
There were no reports of injuries, the spokesman said. The cause of the fire was currently unknown.
