Black Power member Toa Pitman, wanted for violent family harm, flees police in Whangārei chase

A “dangerous” Black Power member wanted over a violent family harm incident has evaded pursuing police in Whangārei.

Toa Pitman’s vehicle was spotted by officers in Te Kamo on Wednesday, a day after the family harm incident.

The 42-year-old failed to stop for police, sparking a pursuit.

The chase ended just over 2km away, when Pitman stopped his vehicle and ran off.

Detective Senior Sergeant Aaron Crawford said police discharged a sponge round during the incident.

Sponge rounds are projectiles designed not to penetrate the skin, and are used by police in high-risk situations.

Police are seeking public help to find Pitman.

Crawford said the Black Power member was dangerous and violent, and possibly high on methamphetamine.

“Pitman remains a serious threat to his victim, and it is a priority for our staff that he is taken into custody,” Crawford said.

Pitman has multiple warrants for his arrest relating to other family harm offending.

“We advise the public to not approach Pitman but call police on 111 immediately.”

Crawford said anyone with helpful information can contact police online or call 105.
