Black Caps set to crush Bangladesh

A 10 wicket haul from Daniel Vettori on day three of the second cricket test has Bangladesh staring at a consecutive innings defeat when play resumes today.
The Black Caps will hardly have time to dirty their whites with just two Bangladeshi wickets remaining after the hosts were reduced to 210 for eight at stumps yesterday, with the Black Caps electing to play for an extra 30 minutes in an attempt to bowl the home side out.
Vettori took six for 70 in the first innings and Bangladesh were forced to follow on just after lunch after being bowled out for 182.
The vice-captain followed up with another four wickets as New Zealand look to complete their fourth innings victory against Bangladesh in as many tests.
Vettori ended the day with 10 for 147 from 57 overs.
The Black Caps spent all day in the field and walked away with 15 wickets at the MA Aziz Stadium as Vettori pocketed his second five-wicket bag on tour after his eight wickets in Dhaka where New Zealand won by an innings and 99 runs.
Off-spinner Paul Wiseman also had success on another pitch tailor made for spin as 15 wickets fell to the slow bowlers during the two innings.
"Fifteen wickets is a fantastic effort in anybody's book. Dan Vettori bowled superbly today with 10 wickets with the chance of more," said Wiseman, who took five for 145 yesterday.
"The seamers did well, picking up wickets when we needed them and there were also some outstanding catches."
"It's obviously a good wicket to bowl on but you probably needed to bowl a bit quicker today because it was quite slow.
"When you toss it up you have a chance of getting hit, but also have a chance of getting wickets."
After declaring at 545 for six on Tuesday, the tourists showed their worth in the field with Bangladesh resuming at 82 for three with the remaining seven wickets falling for just 100 runs.
Mohammad Ashraful gave the fans a taste of things to come in the opening over as he advanced down the wicket and tried to hit Wiseman to the fence but gave Astle an easy catch at mid-on.
That was the first of many poor shots that led to Bangladesh crumbling in the face of the spin attack.
They appeared to have just two tactics on a slow turning pitch. They would either defend or try to hit the ball out the ground.
Often on defence they stretched too far forward allowing Mathew Sinclair at silly point to take four catches while rash shot making led to many dismissals.
The Black Caps fielding was also sharp in patches with two stunning efforts. Nathan Astle's one-handed diving catch while running at mid-on to remove Alok Kapali for 13 and James Franklin's quick reactions to throw out his left hand on his follow through for a great caught and bowled were the highlights.
Captain Khaled Mashud's 51 in the second innings, Javed Omar's half-century and spinner Mohammad Rafique who remains on 30 not out after his boundary laden 32 from the first innings were the few Bangladeshi batsmen to trouble the Black Caps.
"They lacked patience. It was a pretty hard wicket to bat on after a couple of days, but they failed to get the right combination between defence and attack," Wiseman said on the host's demise.
"I think they're still learning at this level and it's going to take quite a while and a lot of cricket. I think if they had some wickets that were probably better suited to them then they'll go a bit further.
"These wickets are turning and bouncing too early and if they can produce wickets which can produce some bounce for the seamers, it may also mean they can survive a little bit longer and bat longer sessions."
Those sentiments would not be lost on Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore who will taste another quick defeat inside five days.
"New Zealand played very well. I would like our boys to get 10 wickets every time we bowl and more often than not we've been doing that but this game was a bit beyond us.
"Five hundred plus runs is such a big total and with a couple of good spinners and fieldsmen around the bat ? that's what led to our demise." ? NZPA
