Organisers of the Big Day Out deny the New Zealand leg of the musical festival is at risk - but say they are looking at venues other than Mt Smart Stadium after an increase in charges for its use.
"We are in continuing discussions with venue operators
to ensure the event stays there," said BDO's Auckland promoters, CRS Management.
Patrons could be confident the BDO would return in January.
It is understood Mt Smart Stadium, run by Auckland Council-owned Regional Facilities Auckland, wants more from venue hire and bar profit from the Big Day Out.
Regional Facilities chief operating officer Geoff Williams would not comment on the increased charges.
He said his organisation was still in discussions with promoters "about how we make the experience fun and enjoyable, and at the same time offer the Big Day Out team a cost-effective and viable option".
The price rise, combined with higher production costs in New Zealand and the gap between the Kiwi and Aussie dollar, has led the show's backers to consider other venues.
The promoter didn't quite rule out shifting the BDO from Auckland: "Leaving New Zealand or Auckland is the last thing Big Day Out wants to do."
