Candy colour and shine define the new season’s head-turning looks.

From Moschino's Barbie moment on the runway, to kisses of pink on models everywhere, there is no doubt it's fashionable to think pink, but nowhere is this more obvious than on hair. Women of all ages are having fun with everything from neon brights to subtle champagne highlights.

We've gone a bit potty over pink today. The model look above, in which Poppy Delevingne, big sister of Cara, shows what L'Oreal Professionel calls a "splashlight", is a new way to wear pink. Rather than a solid colour or a rigidly defined colour block, the pink band has a soft, diffused effect.

It's a "super-quick way to do something new with your hair without the commitment of a total colour change," says Rebecca Brent of Willis York salon in Wellington.

"There is artistic freedom coming through with splashlight and ombre setting the mood for more to come," says Adrian Barclay, of award-winning Venom, in Invercargill.

If pink doesn't tickle your fancy, L'Oreal is forecasting reds used as an ombre update on a dark base, and the technique being taken to subtle new heights by seamlessly mixing brown and blonde in cascading curls as favoured in Hollywood.

Shorter styles are starting to make inroads as well."I love the new pixie and bob looks, too," says Barclay. "So many women look younger and sexier with shorter hair."

Keep it modern by embracing texture and switching around your styling, sweeping hair back or sideways for variety.
