A Christchurch man turned on his three assailants, grabbing an iron bar and smashing the windows of their car, in what appears to be a road rage incident.
Police say charges will result from the daylight attack on Tuesday in the suburb of Wainoni that left blood sprayedover the footpath and two vehicles damaged, the Press reported yesterday.
The driver of a small truck, believed to be in his early 30s, left in an ambulance after cutting his arm while smashing the windows of a Subaru Impreza WRX, police said.
Witnesses said the trouble started when the truck pulled from a driveway in Wainoni Rd in front of the Subaru.
The car's occupants hurled alcohol cans and abuse at the truck's occupants, who stopped in front of a dairy, witness Rae Bonnington said. Three men from the car pushed and punched the truck driver. "It was quite vicious."
Another witness, Mike Johnston, said a man hit the truck driver from behind. Mr Johnston called the police.
The beaten man, who had been kicked while on the ground, then grabbed an iron bar from his truck.
"They [the attackers] scattered like chickens," Mr Johnston said.
"He chased them and he smashed the car up, the front window and then the back window. One of them jumped in the car and the girl [from the same vehicle] ran on to the street. He went to drive off and he hit her."
Acting Senior Sergeant Mike Brooklands of Christchurch police said there had so far been no arrests.
