Bail refused for murder accused

A woman accused of murdering her husband earlier this month has had a bid for bail refused.

Lucille Scollay, 44, is charged with killing Guy Scollay at a Christchurch house in the early hours of February 10.

She was arrested soon after an incident at the couple's Edgeware Rd home, and today made a second appearance from custody at Christchurch District Court.

Defence counsel Pip Hall asked for Scollay to be granted bail to her sister's home in Christchurch.

His client, he said, had the "presumption of innocence", and did not pose a flight risk as she had no passport.

Furthermore she had "very strong family support" and there were, as he knew, no concerns from "the wider victims".

Police opposed bail, and Judge John Strettel agreed. The reasons for rejecting bail were suppressed.

Mrs Scollay, a cleaner, was remanded in custody without plea until March 18.

She waved to supporters in the public gallery as she was taken back into custody.
