The death of a 12-month-old Otahuhu boy is being treated as a homicide, after police declared explanations offered for his severe head injuries "insufficient".
Terepo Taura-Griffiths died in Starship Children's Hospital on November 6, and a post-mortem examination has revealed he died due to suffering a skull fracture to therear of his head and a massive brain bleed.
The injuries were believed to have been caused within a short time of him being taken to the Otahuhu emergency medical centre on November 4.
Detective Inspector Dave Lynch said Terepo had been in the care of a married couple living on Princes Street in Otahuhu, and the couple had been cooperating with police.
However, Mr Lynch said the explanations that had been provided were insufficient to account for the severity of Terepo's injuries.
"The investigation will now focus on reconstructing events over the week period leading up to Terepo being taken to hospital.''
Mr Lynch said police wanted to hear from anyone who had contact with the couple, or who could provide information about their movements from Monday, October 31 to Friday, November 4.
