It was once, twice, three times a baby girl for Dean and Mandy Barker.
But at the fourth time of trying, Auckland's glamour couple have produced a young son and male heir to the Barker family dynasty.
Matteo Barker was born last month to the delight of both parents.
Speaking
at her $6 million Herne Bay home this week, a beaming Mandy said they were delighted by the new arrival.
Mandy, 38, said they wanted to give their children as normal an upbringing as possible despite the couple's high profiles.
"We just want to keep our children out of the spotlight," she said.
Matteo is a brother to Mia, 5, 3-year-old Olivia, and Isla, 1.
Matteo was born just before 38-year-old yachting skipper Dean won the Audi MedCup with Emirates Team New Zealand in Sardinia, Italy.
Dean flew back to spend time with his newborn son on Thursday from Spain where he was racing yet another build-up regatta to the America's Cup.
Mandy, one of the world's top women hockey players during a 10-year career with the Black Sticks, has degrees in marketing and food science.
She won a bronze medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games - one podium place down from what the team managed this week in Delhi.
After retiring from hockey Mandy went into the fashion business and has built up a successful clothing label for pregnant women called Mama2b.
