Awards for students in a number of areas

ACADEMIC: Ethan Kilmister was named the 2015 Dux for Chanel College.

Chanel College has honoured the achievements this year of some of its best academic and sporting students.

Principal Grant Miles said senior student Ethan Kilmister was named 2015 Dux and received the Marcellin Champagnat Cup for Dux, the Mate Sola Scholarship and the Otago University Scholarship of $6000 to help fund tuition fees.

He also received 1st in Subject Awards for biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics with statistics. He was highly commended in history and also receives the Chemical Sciences Trophy for first in Level 3 Chemistry, the Physical Sciences Cup for first in Physics and the Life Sciences Cup for first in Biology.

The 2015 Proxime Accessit was awarded to senior student Andrew Miles, who received the Daniel Delaney Cup for Proxime Accessit, the Monsignor Moore Scholarship and the Archbishop's Award for Catholic Leadership.

He also received first in Subject Awards for English, history, physical education, and religious studies and was highly commended in mathematics with calculus. He received as well the Claire Hills Cup for first in Level 3 History, the Margaret Biggs Cup for Commitment and Knowledge in Level 3 Religious Studies and the Year 13 Cup for first in Level 3 English.

Year 11 student Drew MacDonald, who was the winner of the Sport Wellington " Wairarapa Contribution to Sport Award for 2015, has been honoured for his achievements as an all-round sportsman, coach and umpire.

A week ago Saturday Drew played for the Wairarapa Senior Men's Side in the Chapple Cup in Hawke Bay, Mr Miles said, and had this year excelled in multiple codes and roles.

"Drew was nominated for and won the Sport Wairarapa Contribution to Sport Award as a Year 11 student. That in its self is special, as is his selection and contribution to both the CD U17 squad and Wairarapa Senior Mens teams."

He was also a member of the Lansdowne Senior A Men's Cricket team the two-day and 20/20 competitions and was named captain of the Wairarapa U15 representative team.

He played in Central District U15 Tournament, where he took the eye of the CD selectors and was named in the Wairarapa Senior Men's Representative cricket team as one of the youngest players ever.

He also qualified Level 1 cricket umpire and is sitting for Level 2 status, and qualified as a National Level 1 Cricket coach, Mr Miles said.

He also represented Masterton at Super League North island Indoor Cricket competition and was invited to train in Palmerston North with the Central Districts U17 squad, played Chanel College inter-collegiate athletics and XC team, captained the Chanel College T20 Cricket, played competitive badminton, Senior A basketball team, hockey Boys 1st XI team, and coaches the yr 7/8 Basketball team.

Mr Miles said Drew was a Level 1 basketball coach and Level 1 and 2 basketball umpire, who had and officiated many Chanel collegiate basketball games and had co-umpired the 2015 Wairarapa Collegiate Basketball finals as well.
