At least two people are dead following an "avoidable" crash near Blenheim, raising the holiday road toll to 15 - already three more than last year's total for the entire holiday period.
Two vehicles were travelling down Old Renwick Road heading towards Renwick when one of the vehicles lost control, crossed the centre line and collided with a power pole, police said.
The car then burst into flames. Speed had been a major factor in the "avoidable" crash.
"At this stage we can confirm at least two deceased; however, further investigations are required to ensure no further persons in the vehicle."
Forensic confirmation of identification would be required.
Two people were killed in a crash on the Kapiti Coast yesterday afternoon, at the same spot where where 17-year-old Kelly Thompson was killed on September 30.
"Tragic when you see that little cross there with a santa hat on it and it's exactly the same place,'' said Herald photographer Mark Mitchell, who came across the scene on his way to Wellington.
The official holiday period, which began at 4pm on December 23, does not end until 6am on January 4.
