Authorities searching for couple in dark coloured station wagon in relation to Rat Pt fire near Queenstown

Police are searching for a young couple who were seen leaving the scene just before a massive scrub fire started.

The investigation team for the fire at Rat Pt, near Queenstown, are seeking an older model dark coloured station wagon, possibly grey or green, with two occupants.

They were described as a male and a female, possibly around 25.

The couple had been down by the lake and were seen coming back up, getting into their car and driving away.

Authorities were seeking the station wagon after interviewing the occupants of a white van previously thought to be connected to the fire and determining they were not involved.

Tuesday night's blaze cut power and road access to Glenorchy and ravaged 150ha of native scrub.

The Otago Rural Fire Authority (ORFA), aided by the police, is continuing its investigation into the fire's cause, which was found to be a campfire.

Lead investigator Jamie Cowan has been impressed with the public response to yesterday's request for information.

"We've been blown away by the number of people who have been in touch, it's a real testament to the community that so many people want to help out.

"If anyone has any further information about the new vehicle of interest, or anything else that may help out with our investigations we would very much like to hear from them."
