Audi won't import the new A3 three-door hatchback to New Zealand.
Instead, the German carmaker will bring in the five-door Sportback version some time in 2013. Its NZ operation said at the launch of the Audi A1 that it would no longer import the three-door A3.
The new A3 iscrucial for Audi because it will compete with the BMW 1-Series and upcoming new Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
The A3 prototype has been spied testing in Germany. It was lightly disguised but is clearly a subtle update on the current car. Computer stylists working with last year's Geneva motor show concept car say the new A3 will have a much larger grille, LED daytime running lights at the front with a pronounced crease - tagged "Tornado Line" by Audi designers - running from the front to the back.
Factor in short overhangs and chunky C-pillars and the shape is typically Audi. Inside, quality will take a leap forward as will equipment levels, with a Google Map-enabled sat-nav and in-car Wi-Fi internet.
Petrol engines will all be turbocharged TSI units, while there will be 1.6 and 2-litre TDI diesels. Reports in Europe say a 75kW TDIe model will do 3.5 litres/100km (80mpg) and emit less than 100gr/km of CO2.
There are also plans for electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid A3 models, due in 2013.
Options such as Audi Drive Select and adaptive dampers will be offered, enhancing the new chassis. The A3 is expected to offer a more grown-up experience with a more comfortable ride and greater refinement.
