A major road in inner Auckland has been closed and buildings are being evacuated due to an unfolding emergency incident.
New North Rd in Kingsland is blocked by police and fire trucks, disrupting buses.
Bystanders have described a “strong smell” in the area.
The Herald has approached Hato Hone StJohn for comment.
The road was closed between Morningside Drive and Sandringham Rd. Buses were detouring on this stretch.

Police said they are assisting Fire and Emergency (Fenz) staff with an incident at a property on New North Rd.
“We were notified at around 1.18pm and there are concerns for a person’s wellbeing,” police said.
Police are putting cordons in place on New North Road at the intersection with Bond Street and Sandringham Road, and at the New North Road intersection with Western Springs Road.
