An internet outage affecting thousands of households in West Auckland has been caused by damage to multiple copper and fibre-optic cables, Chorus says.
The blackout began about 5.30am today, cutting off approximately 8000 households with fibre connections in Te Atatū, Henderson and Massey, along with several coastal settlements to thecity’s west.
“The outage is due to damage to several copper and fibre cables,” a Chorus spokesperson told the Herald.
“The fault has been located and repair work is currently underway.”
Describing it as a “one-off localised fault”, Chorus said the repair work ahead is complex because of the location and number of damaged cables.
Affected households are not expected to be reconnected until tomorrow, with work continuing “until services have been restored”, Chorus said.

“Our crews are working as hard as they can to ensure the impact is as short as possible,” the spokesperson said.
“We recognise how important connectivity is to people’s daily lives and appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we work to restore communications as quickly as possible.”
