Footage appeared to show a car stopped at traffic lights where the fight broke out taking the brunt of the first hit after the member of public involved tripped back and fell into it. The driver slowly drove through a red light to avoid the group.
One of the security guards can then be seen appearing to kick the man in the head before the other security guard dragged him across to the side of the road.
Once all three were off the road, one security guard can be seen gripping the man by the hair while he continued to deliver punches to the side of his stomach, with the second officer stood next to him.
The guard can be seen punching the man with closed fists at least four times.
Counties Manukau West detective senior sergeant Mike Hayward confirmed all three men were not connected to police in any way, despite the scene having unfolded outside a police building.
“At around 12.30pm, an altercation has occurred between two security guards and a member of the public on Great South Road, which has spilled out on to the road.
“A Police unit was travelling on Great South Road and came across the incident, with the member of the public pinned on the ground.”
Hayward said both parties were separated and spoken to, and inquiries on why the altercation happened continue.
