Royal Road School and Lifewise preschool shut for the day after large wasp nest found in playground

An Auckland primary school and preschool are closed today after a large wasp nest was discovered in the playground.

Royal Road School in Massey teaches children from years one to eight. Lifewise Ece preschool is at the same address.

School principal Wayne Leighton told the Herald they were concerned about the safety risk.

“Yesterday afternoon a large swarm formed and settled in a tree in the central playground. There were a number flying all around the grounds as well. Fortunately this happened after the end of the school day.

“We made the call to close the school for the safety of students and staff.”

Another school staff member sent a message to parents yesterday informing them of the closure.

“We unfortunately need to close the school tomorrow, Friday 27th February, due to a significantly large wasp nest in school grounds. For the safety of our school community we will not have any students or staff on the school grounds.

“We are hoping to have the nest removed tomorrow. Thank you for your understanding.”

Leighton said the school plans to open on Monday as usual.
