Police spike fleeing vehicle in West Auckland after following it across city; dog unit used to arrest driver

A fleeing driver incident in Auckland today ended with a vehicle being spiked twice and its driver arrested with the help of police dogs.

The driver was seen driving erratically about 1pm on State Highway 1 near Bombay.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but did not pursue after the driver fled.

The Eagle helicopter continued to watch the vehicle “driving erratically and travelling at excess speed” across Auckland.

The vehicle came to a stop on Royal Rd, Massey, after it was spiked twice by police.

The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, then fled on foot before “a police dog unit was used to help arrest the driver shortly before 2pm”.

The driver suffered injuries from the police dog and was taken to hospital, police said.
