The apartment block in the South Auckland suburb was cordoned off in the hours after the discovery.
“Police investigators are currently undertaking inquiries to establish the circumstances around what has occurred, but at this stage the death is being treated as unexplained,” Hayward said at the time.
Three police vehicles were parked outside a Housing NZ complex on the street.
Security workers told the Herald they had been advised not to let anyone into the building while police investigated the death.
