“Police investigators are currently undertaking inquiries to establish the circumstances around what has occurred, but at this stage the death is being treated as unexplained,” Hayward said.
The public was advised to avoid the area at this time.
This morning three police vehicles were parked outside a Housing NZ complex on the street.
The entrance to the apartment block was cordoned off by security on behalf of police.
Security workers told the Herald they had been advised not to let anyone into the building while police investigated the death.
Hayward said further information will be provided when police are in a position to do so.
