The Piha Surf Life Saving Club said lifeguards were notified at 12.42pm that someone had been swept out to sea. They believe the person was “likely a rock fisher”.
In a social media post, the club said it used “rescue response assets” to search the area of the water where the person was last seen.
The person was found and brought ashore by the club’s jet ski but could not be saved despite attempts at CPR.
“We thank all involved for their efforts today and remind everyone to call 111 and ask for police if you see someone in trouble.”
The death will be referred to the coroner.
