The cafe’s statement finished by inviting customers to dine with them before the closure.
“Come and see us one last time for delicious mussels or pint of fine Belgium beer.”
The beer cafe sits along the Promenade in Auckland’s Mission Bay and is a popular spot with locals. They were sad to see the news, with one Facebook commenter hoping it was “an early April Fool’s joke”.
“This is one of the best bars and one of the only places in Auckland or NZ to get Belgian beer,” the disappointed commenter continued.
Others described the end of an era, remembering first dates, gigs, and top-notch beer.
The business survived a demolition proposal in 2021, when a retail and apartment complex would have torn down the well-known building.
Hospitality closures have been on the rise across the country, with 2564 businesses shutting in the 12 months to August 2025, according to data released by Cetrix last year.
Closures were up 19% on a year earlier.
Lipino Restaurant, which also operated from Mission Bay’s Promenade, closed down in 2024 after two decades in business.
The restaurant fell into liquidation due to difficult trading conditions.
