A city leader says he’s “so bloody proud” of a motorist who interrupted a stabbing at a South Auckland railway station, and hopes to meet both them and the victim.
Police say a person was seriously injured after being stabbed multiple times by a stranger outside Manurewa Railway Station at1.20am today.
A witness drove towards the scene, causing the alleged offender to flee, Detective Senior Sergeant Michele Gillespie said.
Police caught a 24-year-old man nearby, and he was to appear in the Manukau District Court today charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The victim was taken by Hato Hone St John Ambulance to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition.
“Police would like to thank members of the public who came to the victim’s aid prior to the arrival of emergency services,” Gillespie said.
Auckland councillor Daniel Newman praised the motorist who stepped in, saying, “Good on the people who give a damn, who intervene and who probably in this case saved a life”.

He was “just so bloody proud” they came to the victim’s aid, the Manurewa-Papakura ward councillor said.
“I’m bloody proud of anybody who’s got the steel and the balls to go and assist somebody who’s in trouble, and doing so in a way which is hopefully going to be a circuit breaker, hopefully a safe circuit breaker.
“Somebody might be alive today because somebody decided to give a damn.”
As well as stabbing the victim several times, the alleged offender also unsuccessfully tried to steal the person’s backpack, Gillespie said.
The bus stops outside the train station were used by workers as a pick-up and drop-off zone because the area was well known to the public, Newman said.
“I don’t go there in the middle of the night, because that wouldn’t be wise if you can avoid it.
“But people do go there in the middle of the night because they’re trying to catch bus services, or they’re getting picked up.”

Most trouble in the area related to isolated incidents of antisocial behaviour, or begging, he said.
“Not [incidents] of the magnitude we’ve seen in this case. Very seldom would somebody expect to go to a public transport hub and end up with stab wounds. And there’s nothing to mitigate against that.”
Newman said he wanted to find those involved.
“I want to meet the victim and see if they need anything. Obviously, they need to recover first and be well.
