‘Big police chase’ across Auckland suburbs, dramatic arrest of pair in CBD

Two people have been taken into custody following a lunchtime police chase across Auckland.

Police said it’s extremely lucky that the “dangerous behaviour” of those in the vehicle didn’t result in anyone suffering serious injuries.

Acting Inspector Matt Limrick said that, about 12.25pm, officers observed a vehicle with no front number plate travelling through Ponsonby.

He said units signalled for the vehicle to stop but it failed to do so, instead continuing on along Great North Rd.

“Further enquiries revealed the vehicle was recently reported stolen.

“The police Eagle helicopter has been able to locate the vehicle quickly and monitor its movements as it travelled through Mount Albert and Grey Lynn.

“A police pursuit was initiated given the driver’s reckless actions, including excessive speed and driving on the wrong side of the road on multiple occasions.”

A witness told the Herald they were cut off by a car during a “big police chase”, which included the police helicopter, at lunchtime.

They claimed the fleeing driver was seen to be clocking speeds well above the limit and cutting off drivers as it evaded police.

Limrick said the vehicle was spiked but continued on travelling through the city until coming to a stop in traffic on Nelson St.

“Police were able to block the vehicle in and two people were quickly taken into custody without incident.

“It’s extremely lucky that the dangerous behaviour of these people didn’t result in anyone suffering serious injuries.”

Charges were now being considered.
