Auckland records hottest November day as humid weather set to linger

Auckland has hit its hottest day in November on record, and the scorching and sticky weather could be here to stay until early next week.

MetService said humidity had climbed to 67% in the city today, with Auckland Airport hitting a high of 27.23C.

It warned similar temperatures were likely over the next few days.

MetService said these conditions could continue until Tuesday.

“What we want to talk about is the type of air mass that’s currently lingering over Auckland,” the forecaster said.

“It is a very warm one that’s bringing down a lot of moisture from the north, so that’s what people are noticing.

“When you have that mixed in with sunny conditions, then you have those very sticky-feeling days.”

The dew-point temperature, a measure of how much water vapour was in the air, currently sat at 16, which was “pretty high”.

The mass of hot air had been dragged over Auckland and much of the top of the North Island from the tropical zone to the northwest.

“The water up there is also already quite a bit above average temperature, so all that does is increase that amount of moisture that’s dragging down, bringing that very sticky, muggy feeling to upper parts of the North Island.”

The hot air mass was also affecting the weather in Wellington, but not to the same degree.

MetService said the hot and sticky weather could become worse tomorrow.

“On Saturday, it might push off for a little bit of respite, but it is not long-lasting respite.

MetService said the very warm, humid air is likely to return on Sunday and could linger until Tuesday.

Some wet weather could also be thrown into the mix tomorrow but there was a stronger chance of rain around Auckland on Sunday and early next week.

“Wet weather will be coming and going, so it’s not going to be raining every day, all day, but there will be some rainy days as we make our way through the weekend and next week.”

MetService also advised that humidity would typically be at its peak around dawn.
