Clubs and friends have expressed their condolences following the death of an Auckland man who suffered an injury in the first rugby league fixture of the season.
Glenora Rugby League Football Club chairwoman Janet Hunt confirmed in a social media post that 30-year-old Eugene Hanna had died on Tuesday afterhe sustained an injury in the club’s fixture against Te Atatū Roosters.
“It is with a heavy heart that we inform our members of the passing of Eugene Hanna on Tuesday,” Hunt’s statement read.
“Eugene was a valued player in our Premier Reserves squad and although a new Bears member, had good friends within the club.
“Eugene sustained an injury in the team’s first game of the season against Te Atatū, which was tragically unsurvivable.
“Glenora Bears would like to extend its gratitude to the Te Atatū Roosters members who helped at the scene, the attending paramedics and Auckland Hospital for their care these last two weeks.
Eugene Hanna died after an injury sustained while playing in the first rugby league game of the season for his club.
“To his family, friends and teammates, we extend our sincere condolences.
“There are not enough words to express the unimaginable loss and grief you are feeling at this time.
“The committee and club extend our sincere condolences to Eugene’s family and friends.”
Other league clubs expressed their condolences, including Marist Saints.
“On behalf of the Marist Saints Rugby League whānau we send our love, prayers and condolences to our Glenora aiga during this heartbreaking time,” the Saints said.
“We are extremely saddened by this loss and are thinking of you all. Alofa tele atu. Rest in Love Eugene.”
New Lynn Stags, Hibiscus Coast Raiders, East Coast Bays and several other clubs in Auckland left similar messages.
