False alarm causes evacuation, chaos at Auckland Airport domestic terminal

Auckland Airport's domestic terminal was evacuated this afternoon.

Auckland Airport’s domestic terminal has been evacuated this afternoon because of a false alarm.

Photos from the scene showed lines of people outside the Air New Zealand and Jetstar ends of the terminal.

One woman posted online saying she arrived to get something to eat and then the alarm went off.

“Right now no one has any idea what happened. But all purposes we are safe outside and waiting.”

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said the incident was a false alarm.

“A fire alarm was triggered and our crews have now left the scene.”

An Auckland Airport spokesperson said at about 4pm that the domestic terminal was evacuated in line with safety procedures after the activation of a fire alarm.

“Airport emergency services and Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded and reset the system. Staff and customers are now re-entering.”
