Investigations are continuing into an alleged attempted robbery in central Wellington this morning.

Police initially reported the incident, which occurred about 4.15am near Te Aro Park, involved two men who pulled out a firearm and demanded another person's wallet.

But it had since been confirmed there was no firearm involved in the incident, Wellington Police Inspector Terry van Dillen said.It was not an armed robbery as initially reported, Mr van Dillen said.

Investigations were ongoing but police were confident there was no risk to public safety in relation to the incident, he said.

Police were continuing to support the man who made the initial complaint.
