Ask Phoebe: Domain Drive closed while walls are fixed

Why is the lower part of Domain Drive closed until December? We are told that there are trees requiring pruning. Given the volume of traffic on this road during peak times the three workmen sighted there a week or so ago might want some assistance. Charles Fairbairn, Auckland.

I have read that Lower Domain Drive is closed because of failing retaining walls. While the work is in progress the carparks on Grafton Mews and Lovers Lane will remain open but will not be accessible from Lower Domain Drive.

When will the bus lane/transit lane be opened at the corner of Neilson St/Selwyn St and Gloucester Park Rd leading on to the Mangere Bridge heading south? Lee Roach, Harold Williamson, Peter Holland, Grant King, and others.

The T2 Transit Lane will be opened at the end of the year. This is when the widening of Gloucester Park Rd onramp on to SH20 south is completed. Work is scheduled to start next month and to be completed by Christmas. Widening of the offramp from SH20 on to Neilson St is also to be completed within this time.

Rodney District Council, before its demise, erected a large advertising hoarding at Silverdale announcing a park and ride location on the Hibiscus Coast Highway at Silverdale. The hoarding has now been replaced with a property for sale sign. Do you know what is happening?

The long-awaited bus station at Silverdale has been approved after an Environment Court appeal. Construction is to begin in November and be completed by June. Planning for the busway extension to Silverdale has started.

Can you tell me what rights a pedestrian has using a non-controlled crossing? Can they just walk out on to the crossing and expect cars to stop? Most pedestrians wait until a car gives way, but not all.

The road code exhorts drivers to slow down and be ready to stop for any pedestrians stepping on to, or already on the crossing. This also includes people obviously waiting to use the crossing. On the other hand, pedestrians are advised not to step out suddenly on to a pedestrian crossing if any vehicles are so close to the crossing that they cannot stop. Pedestrians do have rights. Endangering themselves, and motorists, is not one of them.
