BMW's concept hybrid for Geneva.
Art with power BMW has combined its diesel-engine technology with an "ActiveHybrid" system in a Geneva Motor Show concept car.
The show car, based on a BMW X5, boasts the world's first all-aluminium diesel with a specific power output of more than 100bhp per litre of capacity,
and a generator as part of a mild hybrid concept. The vehicle uses 6.5 litres of fuel per 100km and emits just 172 grams of CO2 per kilometre. Despite its frugality and weight, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics X5 accelerates from 0-100km/h in 8.9 seconds.
The powertrain features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with variable twin turbo, third-generation common rail injection and all-aluminium gearbox housing. The engine develops 150kW and 400Nm of torque from 2000rpm. A compact generator, integrated in the gearbox housing, contributes to vehicle acceleration with 15kW and a maximum torque of 210Nm.
The technology applied in the concept car is designed to support the combustion engine, as well as operating as many vehicle functions as possible electrically by brake energy regeneration.
The concept car is also fitted with an eight-speed auto transmission developed by BMW and gearbox specialist ZF. A solar roof acts as an extra power supply source.
